The Plants of Lunar New Year

 新 年 快 乐  (Happy New Year) !

This week we celebrate Lunar New Year!

Bringing plants into your home and the homes of others can promote positive energy. Isn’t it neat how plants carry a variety of cultural symbolism? Even roses can signify a different meaning based on their colour!

Here are some plants you’ll find around Golden Acre Home & Garden during Lunar New Year that can bring you luck and fortune in 2022.

Citrus Trees

These popular houseplants are popular gifts this time of year as they represent luck and abundance in the new year. Calamondin orange varieties are the most common. Their blooms smell a little like Jasmine and the fruit is quite flavourful.

Care: Place in a bright location where the plant may receive at least four hours of sunlight. Allow the top inch of the soil to dry out between waterings.

Lucky Bamboo

A member of the Dracaena family and one of most iconic houseplants around Lunar New Year. They are said to represent values like loyalty, modesty, and luck. Bamboo can also represent perseverance to stay strong through difficult situations which seems to ring true this year. “Lucky” Bamboo is decorated to represent elemental balance. (1) Decorate with stones or pebbles around it representing Earth. (2) Use a metal pot or decorate it with gold accents or coins to represent metal. (3) Tie a red ribbon to represent fire. (4) The plant itself represents wood, and water comes from its basic care. The number of stalks also plays a role. For example, two bamboo stalks can represent love, nine stalks can represent good fortune, and 21 stalks can represent abundance.

Care: Place plant in bright, indirect sunlight. If growing in water, replenish water weekly. If growing in soil, allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Bonsai

One of the coolest statement plants out there! Bonsai are known to symbolize harmony, peace, and balance which are all good things to encourage in 2022. These miniature trees are all unique and artfully become a representation of the grower.

Care: Place plant in bright sunlight. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out in between waterings.

Orchids

These are showstoppers in the houseplant world and are popular at Lunar New Year as they represent fertility and abundance. Orchids boast beautiful blooms that last for months making them popular additions to the home. Phalaenopsis are the most common varieties here in Calgary.

Care: Place plant in bright, indirect sunlight. Allow the plant to dry out in between waterings.

This houseplant features a canopy of bright green leaves and a sturdy braided trunk. As its name suggests, the “money” tree symbolizes financial success.
