Bringing Houseplants Inside? Think Pests!
On our latest episode, we dove into bringing those beloved outdoor plants indoors for the winter! And while it’s exciting to extend the life of your greenery, especially those trendy Boston ferns that Brandi (and everyone else!) loved this growing season, there’s a crucial step many overlook.
The golden rule for winterizing houseplants: assume it has a problem.
Seriously! No matter how healthy and vibrant your houseplants looked basking on the patio all summer, the transition indoors is a prime opportunity for hitchhiking pests and dormant diseases to make themselves at home. Outdoor conditions often keep pest populations in check, but a warm, stable indoor environment is an all-you-can-eat buffet for mites, mealybugs, and more.
Brandi’s Boston Fern Lesson
Brandi’s beautiful Boston ferns were the envy of the neighbourhood, but even she knows the drill. Before moving them inside, you must inspect them thoroughly. Look for:
- Tiny webs: A tell-tale sign of spider mites, especially on the undersides of leaves.
- Sticky residue: Often indicates sap-sucking pests like aphids or scale.
- White, cottony masses: Classic mealybug territory.
- Discolored or spotty leaves: Could be fungal issues or early pest damage.
It’s far easier to deal with a small pest problem outside than to fight a full-blown infestation that can spread to your entire indoor collection. Don’t wait until you see serious damage—act preventatively! A good rinse, a gentle insecticidal soap spray, or even repotting with fresh soil can save you a lot of headache. Your indoor plant jungle will thank you!
