Welcoming Spring Webinar

Wakey Wakey Gardeners!

Spring is here and we’re finally able to get into the garden! You may have already witnessed some new life in your yard including birds, bugs, perennial shoots, and patches of green in your lawn. Seasonal changes are happening below the surface too as spring bulbs get ready to push up. It’s an exciting time and, if you’re anything like us, you’re just itching to get outside and start playing.

There’s plenty of prep work you can do right now to benefit your garden and your workload later.

Some of the things we recommend you start thinking about:

  • Amending and Cultivating the Soil
    • Breaking up compacted soil and adding new organic matter.
      • Cultivating: Use the right tools! Use smaller hand tools around tender perennials, and larger tools for areas like veggies plots.
      • Amending: Add organic material like compost, manure, peat moss, worm castings, etc.
    • Weeding
      • weed as you go for less work later.
    • Raking
  • Watering
    • As needed.  Especially important for budding trees, bulbs, perennials, and shrubs.
    • Good time to check the status of your watering tools.
  • Fertilizing
    • Only fertilize during active growth.
    • As always, follow the instructions. Less is more, especially in spring. Slow-release fertilizer is a good option. We recommend these general purpose fertilizers from Miracle Gro & Promix
  • Removing Debris
    • Prune trees and shrubs before active growth. Careful not to over prune. Follow the “5 D’s”
      • Dead, Diseased, Damaged, Dangerous, Desirable (Colin expands on these in the video)
      • Learn more in our upcoming webinar.
  • Planning and Prepping
    • Take Inventory. Test and clean tools, sharpen pruners, check and clean pots, etc.
    • Plan those garden goals! Learn from previous years, try new things, and rotate crops.
