Nerf Darts… and Space Junk in Your Flower Beds?!
This week, Brandi found a random Nerf dart stuck in her perennial border, and that sparked a serious (and slightly hilarious) question: What would happen if you found actual space junk in your yard? While we were laughing about toy foam, farmers across the Prairies are seriously being asked to keep an eye out for debris from satellites!
Apparently, with over 8,500 Starlink satellites now orbiting the Earth (and constantly re-entering the atmosphere), bits of carbon fiber and melted metal are starting to show up in farmer’s fields. SpaceX claims their satellites burn up completely, but pieces the size of laptops have been found! While finding a chunk of burned space metal sounds cool, experts point out a few things we need to be aware of. First, every re-entry is a roll of the dice; the risk of this debris eventually killing someone, even if small, is real and, according to experts, preventable. Second, all that burning satellite material is dumping a huge amount of metal into our upper atmosphere, and we don’t yet know the long-term impact on the environment.
So, if you’re planting your new shrubs and you come across something metallic that absolutely did not come from your farm equipment or your neighbour’s fence—stop! You should not touch it if it looks dangerous.

Here’s how to report space junk, according to the experts referenced in the article:
- Safety First: If you have safety concerns about the debris (it looks sharp, hot, or highly unusual), contact the local RCMP immediately.
- Report & Identify: For identification purposes, you can take clear photographs and send them to the Outer Space Institute at [email protected].
It’s a bizarre new reality where gardening might come with a side of international space law! Listen to the episode to hear us panic about what we’d do if a piece of satellite landed right next to the tomatoes.
