If your home is filled with trailing Hoya vines? Well, researchers have just announced the discovery of an entirely new Hoya species—Hoya dawodiensis—hidden away in the remote corners of India. It’s a powerful reminder that our planet still holds incredible secrets, and that every houseplant favourite has a wild origin story.
For years, Hoya (often known as the wax plant) has been a star of the houseplant world, beloved for its thick, waxy leaves and clusters of star-shaped, fragrant flowers. But while we cultivate familiar varieties in our homes, the wilds of the world are still yielding new surprises. Recently, the eastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh reported a monumental breakthrough: the discovery of a completely new species, aptly named Hoya dawodiensis.
This remarkable finding was made deep within the Vijoynagar region of the Changlang district—an area so remote that it is only accessible by multi-day treks or by air. The area remains one of the state’s most biologically rich, yet least-explored regions. This discovery, along with two other notable Hoya records in the region, was a collaborative effort involving teams from India and Singapore.
A Note of Caution: From Jungle to Jars
While the botanical world is buzzing, a discovery like this always comes with a layer of caution, especially for a highly marketable genus like Hoya. The moment a new species is documented, it faces the immediate risk of becoming the next “must-have” houseplant on the market. This can lead to serious issues, including over-collection in the wild, which can rapidly endanger a species before proper conservation plans are implemented. Furthermore, it raises concerns about biopiracy—where native resources are potentially commercialized without fair compensation to the source country and the indigenous communities who often protect this biodiversity.
The state’s Chief Minister has rightly highlighted that these records are crucial for long-term conservation planning. This discovery reaffirms that even in a digital age, nature remains the greatest, most mysterious garden of all, and its treasures deserve our utmost respect and protection.
