Plant Parenthood! Bringing Your New Houseplant Home Safely 🌱
It’s one of the greatest feelings: walking out of the nursery with a new, beautiful houseplant baby. But if you’ve ever had a plant instantly start dropping leaves or, worse, introduce an unwelcome pest to your collection, you know that the journey from the store shelf to your living room is the most crucial part of its life! We got a great question from Nicole this week that we’re answering on the podcast!
“Help! I just bought a peace lily a week ago and the soil was super dry but it wasn’t wilted at all. I gave it a splash of water day 1 and just gave it a bit now too but not sure why the flowers are turning brown! I feel like it’s not as straight up as it as when I bought it either” – Nicole
It turns out plants, like people, get shocked by sudden changes. They need a careful transition period to adjust to the light, humidity, and temperature of their new home. Think of this process as a gentle two-step welcome that prevents both plant death and houseplant drama.
We broke the process down into three simple phases, starting with the immediate ride home with tips that start even at the garden centre. During the first month, patience is everything as you and your plant adjusts. Ultimately, becoming a great plant parent means knowing your plant’s specific needs.
Your New Plant Welcome Checklist Summary
| Phase | Action | Key Goal |
| Phase 1: Grand Entrance | Plant Jail | Isolate new plant for 2–4 weeks to check for pests. |
| The Search | Check under leaves and soil for hitchhiker pests. | |
| Phase 2: Settling In | The Light Test | Test light exposure and monitor leaves for burning or legginess for not enough light. |
| Draft Dodger | Keep away from heating/AC vents and exterior doors. Draft cause cell damage and vents cause the pot to dry out quicker. | |
| The Finger Test or Lift Test | Do NOT water until the top 2 inches of soil are dry. You could also lift one side and test how light it is. | |
| Phase 3: Long-Term Plan | Vow of Patience | Don’t repot for at least 4 weeks as your plant may be in shock as it adjusts. Don’t repot directly into a cover pot. Considering leaving in your growers pot for ease of watering, root growth, and repotting later on. |
| Know Your Child | Look up the specific light, water, and humidity needs. |
