Your Therapist is Green and Photosynthetic 🌿
October is here, and while we love the changing leaves and pumpkin spice everything, it’s also Mental Health Awareness Month. Since our happy place is covered in soil and leaves, we dedicated this episode to talking about the simple, profound connection between plants and our wellbeing.
For ages, we’ve felt better just being around our plants, whether we’re weeding the garden or admiring a thriving Pothos in the kitchen. But is it real, or is it just wishful thinking from a bunch of plant-obsessed people? We dove into a fascinating article from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) that scientifically backs up what we already suspected: Your plants are legitimately good for your brain!
The core takeaway is that the biggest benefits of houseplants are psychological. Sure, they might clean the air a tiny bit, but the real magic happens in your head. Studies show that simply having indoor plants around can drastically reduce stress levels, improve your mood, and boost job satisfaction. Basically, if you want a calmer, happier day, you need a leafy friend nearby.
One of the most interesting (and frankly, hilarious) things the research discovered is that the plant’s appearance matters to your mental health. It’s not enough just to have a plant; it needs to look healthy! An unhealthy or neglected plant was actually perceived as depressing, which means if you’ve got a struggling, yellowing specimen, you might be better off composting it than staring at it all day.
The study also found that people tend to prefer plants with soft, rounded shapes—think lush Weeping Figs or trailing Pothos—and find them more uplifting and relaxing. Plants with sharp leaves or prickles (sorry, most cacti!) were considered less calming. It turns out our brains are happiest with soft edges and dense, vibrant green canopies.
But the final, most important takeaway we discussed is the power of care. Simply viewing a plant is great, but the act of nurturing a living thing—watering it, pruning it, and watching it grow—is incredibly rewarding and provides a massive mental boost. You’re not just tending a plant; you’re engaging in a consistent, rewarding act of mindfulness that benefits both you and your green buddy.
So, this month, we encourage you to hug a tree, talk to your Monstera, and take a moment to appreciate all the quiet mental support your leafy collection gives you every single day.
