Creeping thyme makes an excellent ground cover alternative. Grown in a turf like format
for instant establishment. Dense Purple/lilac flowers through summer, with a strong
aromatic scent make ThymeTurf attractive to butterflies & other pollinators.
ThymeTurf is grown outdoors at EcoLogic Horticulture nursery
located east of Strathmore, Alberta. ThymeTurf is composed of a
one of two species of purple/violet flowering thyme grown on a
biodegradable coconut fibre and soil base.
Installation:
Similar installation process to conventional sod
Prepare a base of top soil. Wet soil before installation and apply a
starter fertilizer. Weed top soil thoroughly prior to installation.
Wide area install – Lay pieces on ground, lay pieces tight together and
stagger joints where possible.
Solider course install – Lay end to end or side to side in a continuous
fashion. (see below image)
Rock Garden/Accent install – Cut pieces into appropriate sizes and
install. Ensure 1 inch depth of soil contact around all of the ThymeTurf.
Water heavily to the point of run off every couple of days for 2-3
weeks after installation. Install from May to October at grade for best
results. Plant in full to part sun locations, ThymeTurf is not appropriate
for shady locations If planting in areas with foot traffic it is
recommended to provide a walkway
Avoid plant in areas that will receive significant foot traffic during
the winter. Thyme will tolerate light and occasional foot traffi c but will
not tolerate any winter foot traffic.
Maintenance:
After establishment: water requirements are low, water during dry
periods.
Bi-weekly hand weeding is recommended. Do not use broad leaf
pesticides.
In Early spring before growth starts:
Remove old growth and apply slow release fertilizer in +/-
10-10-10 range.
