Golden Acre’s FREE gardening webinars have returned for another season! This year, we’re excited to dive into gardening topics like seed saving, water saving, native plants, and even sensory gardens! Join our live stream every Saturday to interact with our resident horticulturist, Colin Hayles!
GARDENING FOR WELLNESS
As the 2025 gardening seasons gets underway, let’s explore actionable strategies that you can employ now to keep gardening fun all season long. As gardeners, we know how easy it can be to get carried away with the season. We sometimes forget that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Channel some of that ‘spring time energy’ into building an intentional foundation with a clear vision of how you want to grow this year.
Reflect
Take time to reflect on the type of gardener you are and want to be this season. Get really clear by asking questions like:
- What parts of gardening bring me joy?
- What aspects of gardening feel like a chore or cause stress?
- Am I a solitary gardener or prefer doing it with others?
- Am I growing to be practical or aesthetic?
Gardening Strategies
While our plans won’t work out perfectly due to all the external factors that might come out way during the growing season, there are still things that are in our control. Approach the season with intention with these easy strategies:
Gardening Schedule
Develop a rough plan for what your daily and weekly tasks might look like. Daily tasks might be things like watering and when. The best time to water is early in the morning. So make a plan to have your coffee out in the garden while watering your plants! Weekly tasks might be deadheading and weeding. Bi-weekly tasks might be mowing the lawn.
SMART Goals | Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound
Break down your goals so they don’t see as big. For example, if your garden chore is weeding, breaking it down so the goal is easier to attain. Start with weeding one specific bed for one hour every Sunday afternoon.
Grow easy & Rewarding Plants
Consider growing plants that require less maintenance like deadheading and water. Keep in mind that high production veggies like peppers and tomatoes, may require lots of sun and water. Some plants might take over a space and require additional live heading like mint. So, plan out what you can handle and balance out your garden with easier options.

Water Smarter
Consider ways to save time, money, and water. Install mulch to keep moisture from evaporating quickly from your trees, shrubs, and perennials. Add rain barrels and run irrigation to your garden. Target water your plants by installing a soaker hose. Improve soil quality by adding amendments so it will retain more moisture. You can also automate your watering with timers.
Work Towards a Goal
Have an ‘end of the season’ goal like a Harvest Party or Canning Session to share with neighbours. The motivation will keep you going all season long.
