Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa), native to western and central North America, is crucial for Monarch butterfly conservation. It's the primary food source for Monarch caterpillars, making it highly attractive to egg-laying adults. Its nectar-rich pink flowers also draw a wide range of pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds. Growing to about 90cm, it features distinctive greyish-green foliage and spherical flower clusters. Seed pods can be dried for decoration. Plant Showy Milkweed to support pollinators, but be aware it spreads readily through seeds and roots. It's best suited for large containers or areas where its growth can be managed. Remove seed pods before maturity to prevent self-seeding. Plus, it's deer-resistant.
