Rough fescues are perennial bunch grasses characterized by their stiff, narrow leaves (less than 4mm wide) that feel rough and have persistent purplish sheaths at the base. They produce tall flowering stems (30-150 cm) with relatively large, awnless flowers. These grasslands are crucial habitats for wildlife, pollinators, and birds, but face ongoing threats from human activities. As Alberta approaches its centennial, it's vital to commit to the stewardship and restoration of rough fescue grasslands, ensuring they remain a symbol of our prairie heritage.
