Gardening with kids teaches us adults patience, communication, and even how to loosen up our natural desire for control and perfection.
Garden Crafts
Here are some ways we can inspire learning both in the garden and out in nature.
Twig Bug Craft
Materials:
- Assortment of twigs – thick and thin varieties
- Assortment of deciduous broad leaves
- Scissors or pruner
- Glue gun
- Googly Eyes
Directions:
To make a dragonfly:
- Select a thicker twig to create the body of the bug.
- Select four smaller leaves that will create the wings of the bug.
- Place a dab of glue on the stem of the leaf and secure to the middle of the twig. Repeat for the remaining ‘wings’.
- Place a dab of glue on the googly eyes and secure them above the leaves on the twig.
- Prune the ends of the twig to your desire length.
- Finished!
To make a spider:
- Using a thinner twig, cut into six equal sized pieces to create the legs of the bug.
- Lay out the twigs like a criss-cross star.
- Take a round medium-sized leaf and put a dab of glue on the centre. Then secure the leaf on top of the twigs.
- Place a dab of glue on the googly eyes and secure them above the leaves on the twig.
- Finished!
