“Hi gardeners. I bought garlic bulbs around mid-September and planted them in my garden. They’ve started to grow! Is this a bad thing? What should I do?”
Will
It’s an excellent question, and one we hear often, especially here in Calgary!
Many gardeners purchase fall bulbs—garlic, tulips, daffodils—as soon as they hit the store shelves in early September. The problem is, the ideal planting time is not about the calendar; it’s about the cold.
The Cold Rule for Fall Bulbs
For garlic and other fall-planted bulbs to thrive, they need to establish a strong root system before the ground freezes, but they must not put too much green growth above the soil. Why?
- Vernalization: Garlic, specifically the Hardneck varieties best suited for our climate, requires a period of intense cold (vernalization) to successfully divide and form a large bulb with multiple cloves.
- Energy Conservation: If your garlic or tulip shoots emerge in a mid-autumn warm spell, they waste vital energy needed for root development. This green growth is then highly susceptible to our severe winter freezes, which can damage the plant and result in a smaller harvest (or no harvest at all) next summer.
The Calgary Sweet Spot
In the Calgary area, the sweet spot for planting all fall bulbs—especially garlic—is generally mid-to-late October, or when average daytime temperatures are consistently cool (below ), but before the ground is solidly frozen. This gives the bulbs the 4–6 weeks they need to develop roots without tricking them into producing vulnerable top growth.
What About Your Sprouted Garlic?
Don’t panic! Since you planted in mid-September, your bulbs simply got a jump-start during a warm patch. For now, the best thing to do is protect that emerging green shoot by applying a thick layer of mulch (6–8 inches of straw or shredded leaves) over the bed. This will insulate the soil, help prevent further growth, and protect the emerging leaves from the harshest winter temperatures. The roots will continue to develop, and the plant should re-emerge stronger in the spring.
It’s a great lesson: wait for the true autumn chill!
