It’s Show and Smell on the podcast today!
On the latest episode of the podcast, we talked about a funny little word that perfectly captures a beautiful autumn moment: Snippid. This term, famously coined by cartoonist Bill Watterson in Calvin and Hobbes, describes that wonderful, distinct, earthy smell of wet leaves—that fresh scent you get after a rain shower or when walking through a damp, autumn forest. It’s the very smell of nature cleaning itself.
That sensory experience of fresh, clean air connects perfectly to our main topic: a surprising study that revealed nature’s secret air filter!
The research came from an unexpected source: a curious California teenager who decided to test whether a simple houseplant could act as a true indoor air purifier. The plant in question? Common English ivy.
In a careful, 12-hour science experiment, the young researcher tested the ivy’s ability to clean sealed containers contaminated with common indoor airborne particles. The results were truly stunning: the English ivy was able to eliminate approximately 78.5% of airborne mold particles and over 94% of fecal matter particulates!
This natural cleaning power is thought to be a result of the plant absorbing these aerosolized proteins through its roots and soil. While caution is advised (English ivy is toxic if ingested by pets or children), this small-scale study points to an exciting possibility. It suggests that a low-maintenance, natural solution might be a powerful and cost-effective way to boost the air quality in our homes.
So, the next time you breathe in that refreshing Snippid of wet leaves, remember the hidden power of plants—they’re not just creating a nice smell; they’re working hard to clean the air around you!
